Write instructions like a brief, not a prompt

People ask what the trick is for writing agent instructions. There is no trick. Write them the way you would brief a competent new colleague on their first day.

The structure

What the job is, in one sentence. Where to look for context. What good looks like, with one example. What to do when unsure. What never to do.

An example

Classify new tickets by urgency. Read the ticket and the last three conversations. Use the playbook page for definitions. If the customer mentions money or legal, stop and ask. Never reply to the customer.

That is the whole instruction for one of our most-used workflows.
